Here is what you can expect in the upcoming weeks:

The 5, 6, 7, and 8th grade classes have all been given a syllabus that outlines what will be taught in my class this year. It goes over Book Reports, Word of the Day, Grammar T’s, Spelling Bee, Speech Contest, Book Bowl, etc. These sheets have been sent home to be signed by the parents/guardians, and I have received all of them. Thank you for 100% participation. I am keeping them uploaded to the website so that you may check them at any point:

Book Report  is due on May 4

**5th grade will NOT be completing an April Book Report as they are reading Wrinkle in Time and will complete a project on that. 

Claire, Micah, Jacob, Xavier, Emmanuel, Jordan, McKenna, and Mazie are the 6th graders who also do NOT have to complete an April Book Report as they scored more than 200 points during our St. Vincent de Paul Service Drive**

BOOK IT: Both the 5th and 6th grade classes are eligible to participate in Book It. Book IT officially begins this month, so any student in the 5th and 6th grade who receives an A on their book report will also receive a free personal pizza coupon from Pizza Hut. Read a book and get free food…does it get any better? Free Personal Pan Pizza for whoever turns in their Book Report on time and receive a B or above (86% or higher).

**Kathryn and Catie participated at the District Contest on Tuesday, April 17th.  They did an excellent job of representing our school.  Fabulous work girls!

DON’T FORGET!!  We are currently collecting CAMPING ITEMS for our JUNE JAMBOREE basket.  Every child should bring in at least 1 item!!

5th Grade

Language Arts:

Unit to be Covered:  Novel- A Wrinkle in Time Ch. 6 – 12

Material Discussed: Reading and Analyzing Fantasty Fiction Novel

Class Work: We are focusing on our first novel- A Wrinkle in Time (WIT).  Students will be responsible for keeping up in the reading, completing chapter packets over reading comprehension and vocabulary.  We are currently working on Chapters 6- end of the novel.  We will also be holding class discussions and doing activities in the room to connect with the literature.

Material Discussed: The Middle Colonies

Class work: Students will read through each lesson of the chapter taking notes over the important vocabulary, people, and places focusing specifically on the Middle Colonies region.  They will also complete section reviews covering the main ideas and supplemental worksheets to help their understanding.  Anything not finished in class becomes hoemwork

6th Grade

Language Arts:

Unit to be covered: Realistic Fiction–Hatchet

Material Discussed: Mood, Imagery, Descriptive Writing, Vocabulary, Survival, Plants/Animals of the Canadian Wilderness, Sequencing

 Class work: Students are reading the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.  They will have nightly reading assignments while we also read in class and listen to it on cd.  Chapters are usually done in 2′s or 3′s with a packet to go with each.  Students are to complete the packets for participation points as we read through them while also preparing for quizzes after every 5 chapters.  They receive vocabulary words with definition for each chapter, which will also appear on the quizzes.  Supplemental worksheets and activities will be done in class to enhance the understanding of the book.  Also, they will be completing a Guidebook about animals/plants/scenary that the main characters encounters.  The entire book is due at the end of the novel

Material Discussed: China Culture

Class work: Students will be looking at different parts of Chinese culture- writing Chinese characters, speaking basic chinese, Chinese Religion (Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism), Ancestor worship, Honor, Food and Eating Etiquette.  Each day they  are introduced to a new topic where they will either take notes or participate in an activity.  Anything not completed in class becomes homework

7th Grade

Language Arts:

Unit to be covered: Poetry

Materials discussed in class: Narrative, Modern, Free Verse Poetry–Figurative Language in Poetry–Analyzing Poems

Class Work: Students are reading over some harder poems this year by such greats as Edgar Allen Poe, and local poets such as Ted Kooser.  We are looking at poems based on their type by reading them in class, identifying figurative language, and analyzing for themes and meaning.  From that, students use them as a model to write their own poems.  Anything not complete in class becomes homework.  At the end of the unit students will be doing a Research Report on a poet of their choosing with analysis of poems included.

Language Arts:

Unit to be covered: Poetry–Playwrighting

Materials Discussed: Analyzing Poetry–Reading and Writing Plays/Scripts  

Class Work: Students are currently working on analyzing poetry in a deeper sense.  They have chose modern poems/songs to look beyond the words and at the message.  They will also be looking at poems in their textbook completing questions and analysis on them.  In the end, they will be given a couple of poems to analyze on their own for a grade that will be featured in the movie Dead Poet Society, which they will be viewing.

Project: Chapter 19 Project (Mon.4/30), Family Geneolgy Poster and Research Assignment will be worked on the week of May 7-11.  The entire project is due on May 11th.  Students are creating a poster that will contain their family tree going back at least 2 generations.  They are to be interviewing the elder members of their family to find out about their heritage.  Where in the world do they come from?  Why did their relatives come to the United States?  Where did they settle?  Please be prepared to help your child and provide them the information they need.
